Maryhill Winery in Southcentral Washington state is more than just a winery. It's the premier venue for intimate outdoor concerts in the summer in this part of the state.

Maryhill Winery sits on a bluff overlooking the scenic Columbia River Gorge. On a clear day, Mt. Hood, Oregon’s highest mountain, can be seen to the west. Stunning, panoramic views are available straight ahead and to the east, also.

A 4,000-seat amphitheater stands just below the winery. There’s a fruit orchard behind it. Concert-goers bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on the grass terraces which face the amphitheater.

Maryhill Winery Hosts Summer Concerts

The winery sponsors three major concerts a summer. Performing in 2009 will be Counting Crows, July 17; Jackson Browne, August 22; and John Legend, August 29. In the past, Maryhill Winery has hosted such entertainers as B.B. King, Michael McDonald, and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

But the winery’s entertainment isn’t just limited to three nights during the summer. The winery provides a variety of music acts in its arbor on summer weekends. The musicians range from soloists to bands which play all types of music, including rhythm ‘n blues, jazz, folk, classic rock and country. There is no charge to enjoy these concerts. A schedule of acts can be found on the winery’s website.

Maryhill Wines Garner Top Awards

Maryhill Winery is an award-winning winery, both on the national and international wine scene. The winery was founded in 1999 by Craig and Vicki Leuthold, who were originally from Spokane, Washington. The winery opened its doors to the public in 2001, at that time one of 100 wineries in Washington; now there are more than 600 wineries in the state, with more opening all the time. This area’s climate and soil are excellent for growing wine grapes.

The winery’s first production was only 4,300 cases. Production of its 19 varietals and 27 different wines now tops 80,000 cases annually. The winery has won dozens of awards over the years for its wines. In 2009, it was named the Washington Winery of the Year by Wine Press Northwest magazine.

Maryhill Winery Is Located Near Goldendale, Washington

Maryhill Winery is located south of Goldendale, Washington, at 9774 Highway 14. It’s about a mile west of Maryhill Museum of Art, a small world-class museum housed in what was to be a grand mansion for Mary Hill, wife of Sam Hill, a turn-of-the-19th-century entrepreneur. East of the museum and the winery is a replica of the English monolith Stonehenge, which was the first war memorial for Klickitat County soldiers who died in World War I.

Maryhill Winery’s tasting room is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Both the tasting room and the deck offer fantastic views of the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area.
