With music composed by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, the songs of 3 Idiots hold appeal for the average Indian music enthusiast.

Swanand Kirkire’s lyrics give the album 3 Idiots a unique appeal. The lyrics appeal to the common middle class Indian, to the average college student, to people who face the small trials and tribulations of everyday life. The story of this film is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone (Rupa & Co), and the songs all fit in nicely with the story and theme.

Shantanu Moitra has composed the music for the album. There are seven tracks in all, of which two are remixed versions of other tracks.

Tracks with Flavors of Everyday Life in 3 Idiots

The tracks All Izz Well and Give Me Some Sunshine both give the listener a glimpse into the everyday life of an Indian college student. All Izz Well is a musical rendition of the students’ “take it easy” attitude. Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Swanand Kirkire lend their voices to this live-without-a-care-in-the-world piece. It is an upbeat piece with the potential of becoming very popular among college students.

Give Me Some Sunshine takes on a different note. It speaks of the pressures of an ordinary student’s life, and their parents’ high expectations from them. The student who wants to break free and re-live his childhood, a childhood of innocence and freedom. This one is set to a softer tune and is voiced by Suraj Jaggan and Sharman Joshi, who also acts in the film.

Friendship and Romance in the Songs of 3 Idiots

Zoobi Doobi is the only track in the album featuring a female vocalist. Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal create a slightly comic, slightly romantic duet set to tunes reminiscent of Hindi music of yesteryear.

Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh is a track with a more serious mood. The music starts off slowly and then gathers pace. The overall effect nicely captures the emotions of two friends longing for their lost friend. Voiced by Shaan and Shantanu Moitra, it explores how two friends miss their third friend’s bubbly, effervescent self.

Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe is also based on a similar theme. The situation appears to be one where one of the three friends is near death, a situation that people who have read Five Point Someone will recognize. Sonu Nigam expresses the pain and the agony of the situation with masterful articulation. The music and the lyrics complement each other wonderfully well to create just the right overall effect that the situation demands.

The remixed versions of All Izz Well and Zoobi Doobi have enough foot tapping beats to be heard at college gatherings and weddings for a significant amount of time to come. All in all, an album with a unique flavor, worth listening to.
